10 addictive Spanish shows that promise thrills and drama!

The land of Spain gobbled up all the hype in the world with their smashing phenomenon in Money Heist, but the country has been constantly producing a lot of quality shows that engaged TV and OTT audiences to the brim. As there are loads of shows out in the open, we bring you a list of ten handpicked ones which would be worth your time. Pick your favourite plot, and start off.

Money Heist

Sans any doubt, this is the show that brought big loads of attention to the Spanish side of things. With memorable characters at every corner, Money Heist turned out to be the ultimate dream for every adrenaline junkie out there. The series’ astounding success on Netflix was a stark turnaround from its TV stint, which turned out to be an utter failure. The show has four seasons with different kinds of emotions lingering all through, making the viewer ask for more.

Elite

Three working-class teens making their way into an ‘elite’ private school is a fair idea, but what happens when the misunderstandings between the trio and the rest lead to murder? Elite deals with this intriguing plot in a suspenseful manner with multiple perspectives conjoining at thrilling junctures. The characters are very relatable, and the milieu is set in such a way that it automatically creates the drama between the people of the show.

High Seas

A Spanish period drama that binds both mystery and thriller elements, making it a sublime watch on the whole. The styling and the backdrop (it entirely takes place on a ship) of the show is phenomenal, and the two sisters being in the spotlight are so well cast that you can’t take your eyes off them. If you like shows that provide a lot of attention to detail, this should be on your list.

Cable Girls

A lot of shows try to explore the drama genre but ultimately fall into the thriller space. However, one show that does the former properly is Cable Girls, a historical drama that focuses on four girls who find jobs at the national telephone company of Spain. Intertwined in many interesting ways, this show keeps the surprises coming with some sumptuous twists. At the same time, it also provides room for loads of social commentary, especially on the see-saw of equality between men and women.

Control Z

Netflix’s latest addition from Spain is an enjoyable, fun-while-it-lasts show set in a school. A hacker begins to unveil shocking secrets about the students to the rest of the school, and what follows is a combination of a teen drama, a whodunit and an exploration of burning societal issues. The cast isn’t great, but there are a lot of nice turns which keep coming one by one until the big one at the end.

Narcos

This is was the first show I started to stream on Netflix when it was available in India and they were offering the first month as a free trial. With no clue in what to choose, I went with the social media frenzy which raved about “NARCOS”. I started with the first season and couldn’t stop myself binging the entire season for the next 10 odd hours. The series is about a drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who became a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine. It also focuses on Escobar’s interaction with other drug lords, and the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) on his tail among other opposition entities. The Season 1 and 2 focuses on the rise of Pablo Escobar and how he became a millionaire and the Season 3 picks up after the fall of Escobar and DEA trying to shut down the rise of another infamous Cali Cartel. Narcos became a reference point to many regional filmmakers in developing their respective scripts. It has a unique narration style and mixes it up with actual footages from the past with the dramatized version. It has a large ensemble of the cast who has outdone their potential but two remain my favourites. They’re none other than Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) & Javier Pena (Pedro Pascal). Despite being a drama it carries a great amount of suspense and thrilling moments with impeccable writing. All 3 seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.

Narcos - Mexico

When the Posters were released everyone thought it would be the 4th season following the 3 seasons of Narcos. But it was ultimately developed as a companion series which focuses on the illegal drug trade in Mexico. Whereas its parent series focused the illegal drug trade in Columbia. One may think if this companion series might not do justice to Narcos. But it was equally great and engrossing like its counterpart. In this series we see the rise of Guadalajara Cartel in the ’80s wherein Felix Gallardo (Diego Luna) tires to bring together all the traffickers of Mexico in order to build an empire. Just like how we have Javier Pena in the Narcos we have Kiki Camerana (Michael Pena) in Mexico. The screenplay was brilliant which makes it binge-worthy. Narcos Mexico comprises of 2 seasons and may have a third in the making, but no official statement yet.

Valeria has extended the deadline more than once and now she’s facing a deadline which she can’t evade. While she’s struggling with her writing she’s burdened with family responsibilities where she has take up a job to make the ends meet. Valeria is caught in between a lot of things which she’s struggling to overcome. But one night at a party she meets someone that changes her perspective about everything. What follows, forms the crux of the story. This series comes as a relief from all the dark stuff off late offered by every OTT competing with each other. There’s an uncanny resemblance of Sex and the City set in the backdrop of Madrid. But the makers make it interesting with their regional treatment and you still enjoy the show. Valeria is based on the novels by Elisabet Benavent and was adapted to the screen by Maria Lopez Castano. Valeria is currently streaming on Netflix.
