20 Intriguing Bollywood thrillers streaming on OTT.

Bollywood has evolved when it comes to thrillers and they’ve done a really good job in dishing out some iconic thrillers along the way with few experimental projects. Such as Death in the Gunj, Gurgaon, Andhadhun to name a few. Thrillers are always a favourite genre. Thrillers have this quality which keeps you on your toes and makes your heart beat faster than it does usually. Thriller doesn’t limit to just murder mysteries, there are few films which carry the elements of horror and still fall under the category of a thriller. It’s a vast genre which accommodates and is an extension of its counter genres. It can be associated with romance, comedy, horror, sci-fi and drama. The suffix does change the course of the film and adds a juicy element which keeps the audience on their toes or stupendously used term “Edge of the seat.” Whether you’re at a cinema theatre or at the comfort of your home, the majority end up choosing a thriller compared to other genres. 1.   Ek Hasina Thi (2004) - Netflix & Prime Video

It’s a neo-noir thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan which borrowed few elements from Sidney Sheldon’s If Tomorrow Comes and had the shades of Double Jeopardy. The story follows a vindictive Sarika (Urmila Matondkar) who wants to avenge everyone who has wronged her. And Karan Singh Rathod (Saif Ali Khan) tops her list. Who in fact is her suitor and possessive of Sarika? The film marks one of the best performances of Urmila Matondkar’s career. Ek Hasina this was produced by Ram Gopal Varma. It also starred Seema Biswas and Aditya Srivastava among others. The film is currently streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

 

2.   A Death in the Gunj (2017) - Prime Video

Set in the backdrop of 1979, A Death in the Gunj is coming of age story, when a shy and sensitive Shutu (Vikrant Massey) goes on a family vacation goes haywire when the self-involved relative and family friends overlook the situation and the holiday ends with an implosion. The film was written and directed by Konkana Sen Sharma. The film features, Vikrant Massey, Tillotama Shome, Om Puri, Tanuja, Gulshan Devaiah, Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh and Ranvir Shorey. The film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

 

3.   Mardaani 2 (2018) - Prime Video

It’s a sequel to the 2014 film Mardaani. In this Rani Mukerji reprises her role as Police officer Shivani Shivaji Rao. The film follows a 21yrs old psychopath killer how kidnaps outspoken women and kills them, one such case is handled by Shivani when she’s posted in one of the states in Rajasthan. The film marks the debut of Vishal Jethwa (Sunny) who did an amazing job as the antagonist. The cat and mouse game between Shivani and Sunny is the highlight of the film. A perfect example of a commercial thriller which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Talvar which is internationally known as Guilty is based on the 2008 Noida double murder case involving a teenage girl and her family’s domestic help. The film follows the investigation of the case from three different perspectives. The film garnered acclaimed reviews by the critics and raved by the audience for its riveting screenplay and performances. The film was directed by Meghna Gulzar. The film had an amazing ensemble of the cast which included Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi. I’m quite sure the majority of the OTT viewers might not be aware of this film. It’s a small budget thriller directed by Shanker Raman instantly grabs your attention with its gripping screenplay. The film follows the daughter of a real estate tycoon who gets kidnapped, her family tries to track her whereabouts and in the process, their long-buried family secrets are unravelled. The film had a very limited theatrical release but garnered good reviews after its OTT release. The film is currently streaming on Netflix and you can watch it for free on Disney+ Hotstar.

6.   Talaash – Netflix

 An intense emotional thriller told in a novel-pattern, where each chapter gets intense as the mystery behind the death of a superstar is unveiled. The writer’s brilliance in linking the investigation with the protagonist’s personal life stands out to be a fascinating constituent. A cop, who has become insomniac due to the guilty thoughts of feeling responsible for his son’s accidental death is assigned with a case to investigate the mysterious death of an actor. During the process, he becomes acquainted with a sex-worker, who becomes the only key to unravel the mystery that exposes him to an unbelievable twist in the end. 

 

7.   Uri – The Surgical Strike - Zee5

The film has indeed become a pride of Indian cinema as it focalizes on real incidents involving our heroes in the Indian Army. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film is about Major Vihaan Singh Shergill, who leads a covert operation against the militants, who killed many soldiers at a military base in Uri, Kashmir. 

 

8.   A Wednesday – Netflix

When the Bollywood was drenched with routine Rom-Coms and Family Dramas, ‘A Wednesday’ became a breakthrough for the industry to expand its domain beyond the linguistic boundaries. Directed by Neeraj Pandey, the film became an appealing showpiece for having a couple of elder characters as protagonists. Although the emotional connection involving the bomb blasts in Mumbai boosted the film’s success, it’s the narrative package of nitty-gritty thriller elements that made it more engrossing. 

 

9.   Baby – Disney+ Hotstar

Yet another showpiece from the director of ‘A Wednesday’ – Neeraj Pandey. The film has ‘Thriller’ written from the beginning till the end. Especially, the team’s operation during the penultimate of 30 minutes to climax keeps you edge-seated with your eyes refraining from blinks. A massive action thriller with a top-notch technical package. 

 

10.   Article 15 – Netflix

While ‘Thrillers’ have a prototyped definition of action blocks, drastic edit cuts, and BGMs, few films do prove to be elite and unique with strong writing. It does have lots of conversations and slow-paced narration and yet it keeps you engaged. Such is the tale of ‘Article 15’ directed by Anubhav Sinha featuring Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead role. A police officer transferred from urban lands to a village starts investigating the disappearance of three girls, among which two of them are found hanging in desolated outskirts of the village. 

11. Ugly - Prime Video

One of Anurag Kashyap’s underrated films in his career. It took a simple concept of ego between characters and delivered a twisted drama with loads of interesting stretches and strong dialogues. The climax twist is something that you will not see coming.

 

12. Ittefaq - Netflix

Abhay Chopra’s Ittefaq is a well-written and interestingly narrated thriller that features a punchy performance from Akshaye Kanna. The film is great fun while it lasts, with a very good climax twist that comes from an unexpected corner.

13.   Badla - Netflix

A remake of the Spanish thriller The Invisible Guest, and a very good one at that. Taapsee and Amitabh Bachchan offer splendid performances in this deliciously twisted tale that has lots of enticing reveal all the way. The film is regarded as one of the best remakes ever done in Bollywood.

 

14.   Mardaani - Prime Video

Rani Mukherji rules the roost in this excellent action thriller that follows a cop on the lookout for a dreaded child trafficker. Tahir Raj Bhasin as the antagonist does a great job and helps the film gallop right until the final showdown.

 

15. Stoneman Murders - Hotstar

Director Manish Gupta’s underrated thriller takes a look at a suspended police officer who comes in to track down a ruthless serial killer. Kay Kay Menon delivers a measured yet impressive performance in this film that keeps you engaged despite the logical loopholes at places.

16. Andhadhun - Netflix

Anyone just interested in thriller flicks would have watched this edge of a seat thriller directed by India's one of the best writer - Sriram Raghavan. Ayushmaan Khurana who was the antagonist depicted the role of a visually challenged pianist so perfect that got him accolades from around the globe. Also, Actress Tabu's antagonistic performance was equally admired as the Ayushmaan's. It is to be noted that the film won 3 National Awards from the Government of India and also went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year in Bollywood.

 

17.   Raazi - Prime Video

Alia Bhatt, who is being criticised continuously for various reasons, delivered this enchanting flick where she portrays the role of an Indian spy who with consent get married to a Pakistani Army officer. The anecdote is how she leaks important attacks of Pak army to the Indian base. With the basic subject holding a thriller genre, the film noiselessly carries two other emotions - Romance and Patriotism. Raazi went on to become the tenth highest-grossing film of 2018.

18.   Drishyam - Netflix

Remakes have been very common in India as the entertainment industry is diverse and huge in respective regions. This particular tale - Drishyam which is originally a Malayalam film holds the record of a first Indian film to be remade in Mandarin by Chinese. The film has also seen it's repetitious remakes in all Indian languages and unusually all the remakes of the film went on to become a commercial blockbuster. The film had Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran in lead roles where Nishikanth Kamat of Force fame helmed the filmmaker's cap. 

 

19.   Kahaani - Netflix

Vidya Balan who played the role of a pregnant software engineer who searches her husband in Kolkata keeps you hooked with her performance in this film. This 2012 Bollywood film released immediately after Dirty Picture in Vidya's career and left all the spectators in shock. As the film is set in Kolkata, with cute Bengali tropes, it was classically accomplished for an unequivocal triumph. The film was well-received especially by the family audiences of the Indian Subcontinent.

 

20.   Trapped - ZEE5

Though Anurag Kashyap bankrolled this project, many of us wouldn't have witnessed this fabulous thriller. Rajkumar Rao, the hero of the film locks himself by mistake in an apartment which is empty due to construction and legal issues. The rest of the story is how the protagonist survives life and escapes from the 30th floor. The film is often compared with Cast Away, 127 Hours, and Locke by Film scholars. It runs for less than 100 minutes and it just holds you on the seat tight for almost 95 Minutes. A survival-esuqe Thriller which would enthral anyone who witnesses it
