Amazon Prime goes big, announces seven films going straight to their platform!
The Corona virus has done a lot of bad things to the Indian economy on the whole, with one of the biggest hits being the one that the cinema industry is facing. However, this has put producers in a situation where they have looked at the option of a direct OTT release, initiating talks with various platforms to sell the film on an exclusive basis. Now, Amazon Prime has come in with a big announcement that is sure to turn heads – they will be releasing seven films over the course of the next three months, which will all be exclusive releases that will stream first on their platform, going straight by avoiding the theatrical release model.
Prime’s films in the pipeline are spread over five Indian languages, with major names such as Shoojit Sircar, Jyothika and Keerthy Suresh taking part. The list of seven films set to release online in the space of the next 100 days are,
1. Ponmagal Vandhal (Tamil) – 29 May
Jyothika’s upcoming film was the first to announce its flight to an OTT platform, creating ripples between producers and distributors in the industry. Directed by JJ Fredrick and produced by Jyothika’s husband Suriya, the film has an ensemble cast that boasts of many well-known names.
2. Gulabo Sitabo (Hindi) – 12 June
The much-loved combination of Shoojit Sircar and Juhi Chaturvedi come back together with the company of another interesting combination in Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana for Gulabo Sitabo, a family dramedy. The first Hindi film to make such an announcement!
3. Penguin (Tamil) – 19 June
Starring National award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh in the lead role, this interesting emotional thriller directed by Eshvar Karthic is produced by Jigarthanda, Petta director Karthik Subbaraj.
4. Law (Kannada) – 26 June
Ragini Chandran, Siri Prahlad and veteran Mukhyamantri Chandru come together for Raghu Samarth’s Law, a film produced by Puneeth Rajkumar.
5. French Biriyani (Kannada) – 24 July
Danish Sait’s comic activities get to sport a new form through French Biriyani, a film written by Avinash Balekkala and directed by Pannaga Bharana.
6. Shakuntala Devi (Hindi) – TBA
Vidya Balan gets into the shoes of Shakuntala Devi, a writer and mathematician who was popularly known as the human-computer. Directed by Anu Menon, the film is bankrolled by Sony Pictures Networks Productions and Vikram Malhotra.
7. Sufiyum Sujatayum (Malayalam) – TBA
Jayasurya and Aditi Rao Hydari star together in Soofiyum Sujathayum, an intense romantic drama directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas.
In addition to this, Prime Video will be putting out subsequent seasons of Family Man, Mirzapur, Made in Heaven and Four More Shots Please.
