Amazon Prime holds Zero Blockbuster Direct OTT Film since Lockdown
Jeya Suriya -
Jyothika's Ponmagal Vandhal was the first-ever film with a leading star to release online in India skipping a theatrical release. The movie streamed on Amazon's Prime Video despite vehement protests from the Exhibitors. Ruling out the disputes Prime Video promoted the film on a very vast scale. Before the release of the film, the Seattle based company also affirmed that they will be releasing 7 movies with prominent actors from different regional Indian languages as a Direct OTT release. They were, Jyo's Ponmagal Vandhal, Keerthy's Penguin, Ayushmaan's Gulabo Sitabo, Jayasuriya's Sufiyum Sujatayum, Vidya Balan's Shakuntala Devi, Ragini's Law and French Biryani. With Vidya's Shakuntala Devi being the latest release, all the seven announced films are already docked to their platform. The bad news is Prime Video which went overboard with the budget on procuring all those did not even find a single winner out of the seven films. Majority of the released seven films have faced only negative reviews. Vidya's Shakuntala being their last hope has got vile reviews.
Netizens are also affirming that Prime Video even after acquiring movies with an over-board budget and also promoting them with their full-page paper advertisements, they have failed to even score a single mark despite having releases with influential stars. Experts close to us also indicate that Prime Video got the seven films with extensive funds to add 10 Million Patrons to their portal. But now, we assume it looks highly unlikely. It is to be noted that Prime Video now has got few shows on their pipeline ready for release. Their next big release would be Bandit Bandits on August which has music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy followed by the most awaited new season of Mirzapur.
