Apple TV+ orders new series The Shrink Next Door, with Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd
Apple TV Plus has been aggressively pursuing interesting and exciting content to showcase on its streaming service. Its latest move in that direction is a straight-to-series order for thrilling drama, 'The Shrink Next Door'. Apple TV Plus won the rights to the series after an intensely competitive tussle, with multiple streaming platforms bidding for the rights.
The series is based on the Wondery and Bloomberg Media podcast of the same name, which ranked number one on Apple's podcast charts for three straight weeks. The Shrink Next Door will be an eight-episode limited series and will be directed by Michael Showalter (The Lovebirds). While the original podcast was written by Joe Nocera, it has been adapted for the screen by Georgia Pritchett (Succession, Veep)
The Shrink Next Door is based on the true story of a psychiatrist to celebs who took advantage of his proximity to well-known people, courtesy his profession, for personal gain.
It stars Paul Rudd as the shrink Dr Isaac Herschkopf, who slowly and very shrewdly takes over the home and business of his longtime patient Martin Markowitz, played by Will Ferrell. The narrative depicts how a relationship that should be based on trust and integrity is marred by greed, malicious manipulation and outright exploitation.
Pritchett, Rudd and Ferrell are also executives producing the series, along with Showalter. Marshall Lewy is executive producing on behalf of Wondery, and Jared Sandberg, Katie Boyce, and Francesca Levy for Bloomberg Media. Original podcast host and writer Joe Nocera is the co-executive producer on the show.
