Valentine's Day marked the return of Netflix's Spanish period drama Cable Girls (Las Chicas del Cable), and it's sure to be a bittersweet premiere. Though the show built up a dedicated fanbase for five seasons — an impressive run considering how often women-centric shows on Netflix are cancelled all too soon — Cable Girls will not return for Season 6. Instead, Season 5 will be split into two parts, with Part 1 debuting on Feb. 14 and Part 2 later in the year.

At the end of the last season, Angeles had died, Carlota and Oscar had fled to Spain, Marga opened a business with Pablo and Lidia traveled to New York with Eva and Francisco to keep her daughter safe from Carmen, Carlos's mother. She left Carlos only a letter to explain her decision.

The new season picks up with Lidia in New York, but the show does not stay there. Lidia finds a letter from Angeles's daughter, Sofia, that states that she had traveled to Spain to join the militia to fight in the Spanish Civil War.

We learn that Sofia also moved to New York to stay with Francisco and Lidia after her grandmother died. Lidia then goes to Spain to bring Sofia back and we -- through Lidia's eyes -- see how much Madrid and Spain have changed since the onset of the Civil War. As soon as Lidia got to Spain she reunited with Marga and Pablo who were working in what used to be the telephone company building. Carlota (Ana Fernández) and Oscar (Ana Polvorosa) worked together as journalists. Oscar is deeply humiliated when the Nationalists take control of Madrid. The old friends joined in the effort to find Sofia. They visited everyone they knew with influence and connections, including their old friend Victoria (Kiti Mánver) and an American journalist (Alex Hafner). The American became quite friendly and helpful and a major character in the story.

Every act of every episode came with a twist and a surprise. When we reached the end of episode 5, everyone’s life was shattered. Nobody knew what would happen next. Some of the characters ended episode 5 in a happy place, some in utter hell. Plenty of cliffhangers keep you holding on for the final part of the final season.Fans will just have to cross their fingers that the remaining protagonists finally get their happy endings.

I love the fierce independence of the women, I love their unbreakable bonds of friendship. The largely female cast is always a big draw and each of the women are well-developed and given room to grow and be.

Rating- 4.5/5
