Disney+ Hotstar finally arrives in India on 3rd April
In a spot of good news for Indian viewers, Uday Shankar, President, The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman, Star & Disney India, announced that Disney+ Hotstar will finally arrive in India on 3rd April. Originally planned for a 29th March launch to coincide with the start of the IPL season, the launch is finally happening now, in a much-needed relief for home-bound Indians.
With millions of Indians isolated at home due to the Coronavirus lockdown in the country, and OTT platforms their only source of entertainment, it is the perfect opportunity to launch Disney+ in India and rake in a sizeable number of subscribers.
Said Uday Shankar in a statement to the media, “With the success of Hotstar, we ushered in a new era for premium video streaming in India. Today, as we unveil Disney+ Hotstar, we take yet another momentous step in staying committed to our promise of delivering high-quality impactful stories for India that have not only entertained but also made a difference in people’s lives, a promise that is even more meaningful in challenging times such as this. We hope the power of Disney’s storytelling, delivered through Hotstar’s technology, will help our viewers find moments of comfort, happiness and inspiration during these difficult times.”
The new streaming entity will offer two options to subscribers — Disney+ Hotstar VIP and Disney+ Hotstar Premium. The premium version will be available to viewers at a subscription rate of Rs 1499 per year, which will give them access to premium Disney+ content, including its slate of 29 Originals along with Disney movies, Pixar, National Geographic, Star Wars and Marvel.
Additionally, viewers will still be able to watch the premium English language content available to Hotstar Premium subscribers as a result of Hotstar's tie-up with HBO, Fox, Hulu and Showtime.
The Disney+ launch in India will be accompanied with a grand virtual red carpet event on 2nd April, with the premiere of The Lion King (in English, Hindi, Tamil & Telugu) at 6 pm followed by the popular Disney+ original The Mandalorian at 8 pm.
