Disney+ Hotstar’s ‘Multiplex’ Launch

The coronavirus pandemic has halted the ability to both release big-ticket films at the theatre as much as watch them. At such a time, some of the biggest names in Bollywood have come together to ensure that the entertainment always continues.

Just a few hours after the announcement that streaming service Disney+ Hotstar will be releasing 7 big blockbusters on its service between the months of July and October for subscribers, President and Chairman of the Disney company Uday Shankar joined actors Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Abhishek Bachchan and Varun Dhawan to announce ‘Multiplex: First Day First Show ki Home Delivery,’ the direct-OTT release campaign for the company. The event was commemorated with all of them using a clapboard like a muhurat shot.

Starting with late Sushant Singh’s Rajput’s romantic drama ‘Dil Bechara’ (an adaptation of the Hollywood film and bestselling novel The Fault in Our Stars), the next three months will see the release of the following movies:

Laxmmi Bomb: Akshay Kumar stars in this much-awaited horror-comedy about a man who gets possessed by the spirit of a transgender. Directed by Raghava Lawrence, the film is Akshay’s third collaboration with Kiara Advani (after Fugly and Good Newwz).

Bhuj: The Pride of India: Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha star in a war film set during 1971 when an Indian Air Force pilot reconstructed the IAF airbase in Bhuj with the help of 300 local women.

Sadak 2: This true sequel takes forward the story of Ravi (Sanjay Dutt) who meets two people and rediscovers love on his way to the Kailash Parbat. Alia Bhatt stars in the movie and is being directed by father Mahesh Bhatt for the first time.

The Big Bull: Inspired by the Harshad Mehta securities scam of 1992, Abhishek Bachchan stars in Ajay Devgn’s production The Big Bull, directed by Kookie Gulati.

Other Films which are part of the line-up include Lootcase with Kunal Kemmu and Khuda Haafiz starring Vidyut Jammwal.

Speaking about the initiative, Shankar said, “Film viewers and fans have the birthright on the release of a film. I feel that the direct release of these films will give not just movies a new lease on life, but also the industry in general.”

Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar echoed the sentiment. Said Ajay, “At the moment, not every film can be released at the theatre. If we take the pandemic as a silver lining, it has created more opportunities for more films to be made and released. Eventually, we should see this as a way for the industry to grow.” Akshay Kumar stated that while he would love it that films were also released in theatres, the safety of the people is the biggest priority. “If I can give people some happiness at this time by releasing my film on Hotstar, then this just adds to my joy as a person who is in films.”

‘Multiplex’ kicks off with Dil Bechara starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi on July 24.
