Disney Plus to launch in India on 29 March in collab with Hotstar, to be called Disney Plus Hotstar

Disney Plus is finally arriving in India and the date announced for the much-awaited launch is 29th March! The news comes straight from the horse's mouth - none other than Disney CEO Robert Iger declared the news last evening. Disney Plus will launch on the existing Hotstar platform, and will most likely form a single entity with Hotstar, called Disney Plus Hotstar.

Disney had bought Hotstar's parent company 21st Century Fox last year, owing to which it gained complete ownership of Hotstar. Launching Disney Plus on Hotstar, therefore, becomes a quick and easy way to make an entry into the country and establish the streaming service quickly. Hotstar is currently the largest OTT platform in India with regards to the number of paid subscribers. Hotstar has a user base of 28.6 million paid subscribers, which is miles ahead of its competitors. The fact makes it extremely lucrative for Disney Plus to launch on Hotstar, thereby tapping into Hotstar's subscriber assets.

While most Disney shows and movies, Marvel movies, Star Wars movies are already available on Hotstar due to its being owned by Disney, Indian viewers have been woefully deprived of the chance to watch recent shows such as The Mandalorian.

All that should change for the better, once Disney Plus officially launches in India. However, the kind of subscription for Disney Plus isn't known yet - will there be separate subscription required for Disney Plus, or will it be bundled along with a Hotstar subscription.

The price points to haven't been announced yet. In a statement to the media, Robert Iger said, “We're not giving specifics about the price at this point but expect that there'll be two primary products brought into India. One will be more premium in nature that will include the entire library, so with the original programming and the other one will be more basic that will have the library and not the original programming."

Disney Plus was launched in November 2019, but only in a few countries - USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands. Several more countries will receive Disney Plus from 24th March, namely, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria.
