Drishyam 2 is the sequel to the mega-blockbuster that came out in 2013. The film has the same cast as the first, and is directed by Jeethu Joseph.

What is the story about?

Drishyam 2 is a sequel in every sense of the word, and it takes off from a scene 6 years after the events that took place in the previous film. Georgekutty (Mohanlal) has now turned a theatre owner and is in the process of making his first film as a producer-director as well. Despite his family still living with the doubt, Georgekutty ensures that they are in a safe haven, only to have his privacy invaded by the reopening of the case due to a new lead. What happens thereon, forms the crux of this film.

Analysis

Drishyam 2’s mood is maintained very well right from the beginning of the film, thanks to the same world that it continues in with the rest of the characters coming through a new graph. Jeethu Joseph ensures that there is no stone left unturned in the frame, as he puts together a coherent script that entirely falls in line with the clues that the first part had. Jeethu’s interesting narration takes off from the word go, as he introduces the new characters and situations with a high level of clarity and intrigue, not letting the pace of the film drop. With help from the entire cast, the final 45 minute stretch of the film is its best bet, and it does pay off with smacking reveals and a convincing closure. Drishyam 2 may fall slightly short in comparison to the first, but the film does come off as a well-packaged outing.

Performances

Mohanlal as Georgekutty will go down as one of the iconic characters of Malayalam cinema, and the actor keeps the respect intact in this film by doing his part to the T. As it is more of a character that expresses more than what he speaks, the intensity level maintained by the actor, especially in the second half, is really good. Meena and the two on-screen daughters are splendid in their roles as well, with Asha Sharath and Siddique returning to fine form as well. Above all the supporting characters, it is Murali Gopy who walks away with the claps, as he does a fantastic job as the cop working on the case for long. It’s a part with loads of screen time and influence to the story, and it has been handled well by the multi-talented artist.

Music & Other Departments

Drishyam 2 may not have the technicalities of the first, but Anil Johnson’s score does understand the dynamics of the film and gives it what it needs. The other departments of the film sit in accordance with the script.

Highlights

Mohanlal’s restrained yet enjoyable performance is a huge plus.

Drawbacks

The film does not have a huge load of wow moments despite being entirely engaging, especially if you compare it to the first part.

I thoroughly did. It is very rare that we get such a worthy sequel.

Do I recommend it?

Drishyam 2 is a punchy and engaging sequel that warrants your time. Slot it up in your weekend plans.
