What is the story about?

Suruli (Dhanush) is a happy-go-lucky gangster in Madurai, who lives his life carrying out a parotta shop and executing murders. When Suruli gets a call-up to the UK by a famous gangster Peter (James Cosmo), who assigns him to take down an Indian gangster in the form of Sivadoss (Joju George), things work out well for him as he enjoys his first major upgrade in life. However, what is at the surface isn't what it actually seems to be, as Suruli understands the true notion behind Peter’s actions, and decides to act against it.

Analysis

Karthik Subbaraj sticks to the basics in his narrative, introducing the characters in style and kicking off the story in a fun-filled, enjoyable manner. When the story moves to the UK however, there is little to get excited about, as the proceedings move forward in a very mundane manner. There is hardly anything to cheer about, as the one-toned characters and seen-before situations are another ringback to Karthik Subbaraj’s other films. The film regains some momentum in Dhanush’s mass moments and the important flashback sequence, which is particularly well shot and brings about some emotions into the otherwise empty structure. As the entire film takes place in a foreign land, the amount of nativity goes for a toss, as the film loses the grip on the balance between paying heed to Dhanush’s mass image and the real undercurrent in the storyline. What we ultimately get is a mixed bag of Dhanush’s histrionics, a backdrop with good potential and a long list of unexciting scenes.

Performances

Dhanush’s role carried a lot of expectations, but the film ultimately does not deliver what was expected of him. Karthik Subbaraj who usually pens his gangsters with unique traits, has nothign special to offer here. The supporting cast has a lot of well known names in Joju George, Aishwarya Lekshmi, James Cosmo, Kalaiarasan and so on. But except for Aishwarya, the rest of the actors feel wasted and needed more scope to perform and make an impression.

Music & Other Departments

Santhosh Narayanan is definitely the best contributor to Jagame Thandhiram, with a solid score that pumps up the fire into almost every scene. The way he synchronizes his score with the film’s high moments is something that is likable. On the other hand, the technical departments such as the cinematography and the editing are neatly done.

Highlights

While Santhosh’s Narayanan’s score is surely a plus point, its nice to see Dhanush enjoying himself in the role of a gangster.

Drawbacks

The film’s storyline is wafer thin, and has nothing to cheer about.

Did I enjoy it?

Not much, this was packed with spiritless stretches and could have been much better.

Do I recommend it?

Jagame Thandhiram is a half-baked gangster drama from Karthik Subbaraj, which needed more pulp in the storyline and narrative. Dhanush tries his best to save it, but in vain.
