JOHN OLIVER ROASTS DISNEY OWNED HOTSTAR.
When John Oliver learnt, through his loyal viewers, that Indian streaming service Hotstar had cut out the episode from his show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, where he had been openly critical about Indian PM Narendra Modi, Oliver got into a typical attacking mode and blasted Hotstar for doing what it did.
The episode, which aired on his HBO show, ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ on Sunday night in the USA, will stream in India on Tuesday morning. A couple of weeks ago, ahead of US President Donald Trump’s India visit, John Oliver had criticised PM Modi and his policies on his show. Hotstar, which streams most of HBO content in India, got into defensive mode and cut out the entire episode from its streaming library.
John Oliver obviously didn’t take it kindly and lambasted Hotstar for indulging in blatant self-censorship. He even raked up past episodes where Hotstar had done the same thing. In two episodes, Hotstar censored disrespectful references to two of Disney’s iconic characters – Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Since Hotstar is wholly owned by Disney, courtesy Disney’s buyout of Fox, it is apparent why Hotstar is perpetually on a censoring spree whenever it comes to Disney references.
But John being John, he challenged Hotstar with more Disney references in the future, saying, “If you think that you have to remove anything that reflects poorly on Disney from this show, I have some bad news for you, my friends. I am f**king Zazu right here. Everything that comes out of this beak is a ‘Disney Fact.” For the uninformed, John Oliver had voiced Zazu in the recent live-action remake of Disney’s The Lion King.
The episode that has John Oliver lambasting Hotstar streams in India on Tuesday morning on Hotstar. Here’s hoping we get to watch it — uncensored.
