Looks like the wait for Disney + in India prolongs.
Digital viewers in India will have to wait for some more time before they can watch their favourite Disney+ shows. The Coronavirus pandemic has forced the powers that be at Disney and Hotstar to put off the launch of Disney+ on the Hotstar platform indefinitely.
The original launch date of Disney+ Hotstar, the new entity —a hybrid of both platforms, had been fixed as 29th March to coincide with the launch of the IPL season. Disney+ saw the popularity of the IPL as a springboard to rake in subscriptions to its streaming service. But now, in view of the Coronavirus threat, the IPL has been deferred to 15th April, which again may or may not be.
Disney+ has therefore decided to cancel its launch in India on 29th March, and hold it at a later date- it's waiting for the IPL launch, maybe? No new date has been announced, as of now.
Uday Shankar, President, The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman, Star & Disney India released a statement to the media, which read, “We recently announced that Disney+ would launch in India through the Hotstar service in conjunction with beginning of the Indian Premier League cricket season. Given the delay of the season, we have made the decision to briefly pause the roll-out of Disney+ and will announce a new revised premiere date for the service soon."
