What is the story about?

Malik is the story of a young man Sulaiman Ali (Fahadh Faazil) who gets into the wrong ways at the beginning, but later realizes the struggles of his people and fights for their rights against oppression and corruption.

Analysis

Mahesh Narayanan’s Malik is a gangster tale that has an interesting backdrop of Ramadapally, with well-known faces essaying all its characters, who are differently designed all round. The film runs towards a single event which is the killing of the titular character, with all the narration taking place around him. However, the film does not bring forward any new tropes on its own and is busy adapting to the tropes and techniques used by other gangster films in the past. Despite Fahadh Faasil’s superb performance and some really well-shot sequences, it becomes hard to shake off the hangover that the film attains from other quality works such as The Godfather, Nayakan and so on. What starts off as an interesting drama slowly moves into familiar territories and ends on a very middling note.

Performances

Once again, Fahadh Faasil impresses big time in his well-measured performance that gives him a lot of variety to cast his spell on. While he exhibits a certain level of charm in the beginning, he also brings up a strong vibe and the look of a respected man in the aged sequences. Supporting him very well is Nimisha Sajayan, who just cannot put a foot wrong in recent times, and adds this one too to her solid lineup. Dileesh Pothan and the rest of the cast fit the bill well, delivering what the doctor ordered at all points.

Music & Other Departments

Malik is gifted with a fantastic score by Sushin Shyam, who understands the Muslim backdrop of the film and does a great job. The film’s cinematography is stunning with lots of single-take shots, top angles and more special stuff to clap for.

Highlights

Fahadh Faasil’s top-notch performance is the film’s biggest plus.

Drawbacks

The film suffers from a slow-paced setup and doesn't really offer something novel in terms of the drama.

Did I enjoy it?

Yes, in parts. It is not a great film but I found it to be a decent watch with a few complaints.

Do I recommend it?

Malik is definitely worth watching for Fahadh Faasil’s terrific performance, even though you may need a lot of patience and will have to lower your expectations.
