What is the story about?

Jaison is a tailor who finds it hard to get himself a way to fly abroad for work. As he falls into the wrong quarters with acquaintances in the village, an unlikely incident changes his life after he is struck by lightning. However, Jaison must accept that he is not the only one in his surroundings to face such an incident, and will have to fight against a baddie (Selvam) who uses the power with wrong intentions.

Analysis

Minnal Murali differs from the other superhero films that we have seen in India to date, getting the premise right and keeping things simple for the most part. The film is not in a hurry at all and gets busy introducing its world little by little to the audiences and building the character of Jaison also at the same time. Though the overall pacing of the film is a bit slow, the events that take place are interestingly put together without much of a dramatic instant, and the film moves on step by step until it gets to the exciting, fast-paced junctures in the second half. What makes Minnal Murali special is the fact that the film is both cute and thrilling at the same time, and credit must go to Basil Joseph for keeping the fun factor alive throughout without which the film would have become a drag of sorts.

Performances

Tovino Thomas is spectacular in the lead role, playing the man who gets possessed with special powers. Tovino has a charm that he carries forward for the entirety of the film, and it is one of his sweetest performances to date. On the other hand, Guru Somasundaram brings across an extension of the psychotic character that he has played in his other films and is partly good in his role. The rest of the cast are handpicked and have good space in the film, according to their importance in the storyline.

Music & Other Departments

Minnal Murali is fabulous technically with Sushin Shyam’s outstanding score giving the superhero film just what it needs, with the theme track working wonders towards the end. The film has neat cinematography and very good production design which take it closer to its aim.

Highlights

Tovino Thomas’ superb performance and the neat treatment for a superhero film make this click.

Drawbacks

The film’s patient pacing and the fact that Guru Somasundaram does not make for a great villain are drawbacks.

Did I enjoy it?

Yes. This was worth a watch for sure.

Do I recommend it?

Yes. Minnal Murali is a good bet for Netflix, and is sure to make waves in the coming days.
