Music Review: Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, a comedy directed by Abhishek Sharma, is already looking like a fun film, judging by its trailer. The situational humour of the film, that stars Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh and Fatima Sana Sheikh, is aptly reflected in the soundtrack, done by two composers: Javed-Mohsin and Kingshuk Chakravarty.
Song: Basanti
Singers: Payal Dev, Danish Sabri
Composer: Javed-Mohsin
Lyrics: Danish Sabri
Imagine an “item song” set in a bar, with naughty lyrics and the wittiest homage to Sholay you can think of, and Basanti immediately comes to mind. Sung with a saucy flavour by Payal Dev and Danish Sabri, who also doubles up as the cheeky lyricist, this track is a raucous blockbuster.
Song: Waareya
Singers: Vibhor Parashar, Palak Muchhal
Composer: Javed-Mohsin
Lyrics: Kunaal Vermaa
After the boisterousness of Basanti, Javed-Mohsin composed a soft romantic track, Waareya, that talks about the ardent love shared by two characters in the film. This is a soulful romantic track with beautiful Punjabi lyrics by Kunaal Vermaa. Vibhor Parashar and Palak Muchhal sing the duet version very well, with Parashar also crooning a solo version. This track is strictly okay, but then, who doesn’t love a decent Punjabi romantic track?
Song: Ladki Dramebaaz Hai
Singers: Jyotica Tangri, MellowD, Aishwarya Bhandari
Composer: Javed-Mohsin
Lyrics: Danish Sabri
Obviously, in keeping with the general mood of the film, the next track, Ladki Dramebaaz Hai, is a peppy, mischievous number focusing on the exploits of a girl. Sung with gusto by Jyotica Tangri, MellowD and Aishwarya Bhandari, this is a track for the clubs, and Danish Sabri keeps the mischief up with lyrics like “Woofer ko toh loud baja, beat pe apni crowd nacha”.
Song: Dauda Dauda
Singers: Divya Kumar, Mohsin Shaikh
Composer: Javed-Mohsin
Lyrics: Danish Sabri
Dauda Dauda is a track loaded with situational humour, which should work with audiences after they have watched the film. Divya Kumar and Mohsin Shaikh team up for this grungy track that showcases the cat-and-mouse game between the two protagonists.
Song: Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari
Singers: Sanj V., Chinmayi Tripathi
Composer: Kingshuk Chakravarty
Lyrics: Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek Sharma himself writes the title track of the film, which has been composed by Kingshuk Chakravarty. This is a strictly situational track, but it perfectly captures the slapstick mood of the film.
Song: Bad Boys
Singer: MellowD
Composer: Kingshuk Chakravarty
Lyrics: MellowD
The soundtrack ends with the Punjabi hip-hop song Bad Boys, which seems to be picturized on Diljit Dosanjh in the film. Written and sung by MellowD, this is supposed to capture the “cool quotient” of the protagonist.
Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari has a very likeable soundtrack, with the songs expected to gain even more traction after its release. While most of the songs, such as Basanti, Ladki Dramebaaz Hai and the title track are instant winners on the dance floor, those in a romantic mood can definitely check out Waareya.
