What is the story about?

The story follows a CIA operative JJ (Dave Bautista) who is sent to surveil a family along with his tech support Bobbi (Kristen Schaal). They’re on a mission to keep an eye on the in-law-family of Victor Marquez (Greg Bryk) who’s about to build a miniature nuclear bomb. The covert set-up to surveil the family gets exposed when 9-year-old Sophie (Chloe Coleman) walks into JJ and Bobbi spying on them in their apartment. Sophie takes advantage of the situation and blackmails JJ to teach her the ways of becoming a Spy. The film is directed by Peter Segal.

Performances
My Spy hardly gives any room for performances. Dave Bautista character in the film is nothing less than a massy character in any Indian film. Bautista is seen flaunting his smoulders more than his acting chops. I really loved Bautista in Guardians of the Galaxy as Drax. But none of it is remotely seen in “My Spy”. Chloe Coleman is made to present herself overly cute and aggressive which didn’t quite sit well with the tone of the film. The chemistry between JJ and Sophie seemed too forced unlike what we see in “The Gameplan” between Dwayne Johnson and Madison Pettis which is one of the best I’ve seen in this kind of adult-kid comedies. My Spy pairing was tried and tested one too many times, but the main reason it failed was because of the poorly written characters with lame dialogues.

Analysis
This is a genre which comes very easy to Hollywood where they keep shuffling actors and package them as if it’s a new film. My Spy is just another new package which was marketed well on the broad shoulders of Bautista but the mighty couldn’t handle the entire burden. It tries hard to kick in laughs but fails terribly. The comedy was forced and the actors lacked chemistry. Agreed this is a film which one may call a “No brainer”, unfortunately the makers took the term very seriously. Even if you take the part which involves the kid, which at times becomes a little cringy. Even the action sequences seemed too orchestrated and the film looked too much like a sitcom than a Hollywood film. Originally it was scheduled to release in August 2019 which was pushed to March 13th 2020 and once again pushed to April 2020. After being postponed so many times it finally arrived on OTT.

Music and other Departments
There’s nothing much to appreciate. The film had this vague sitcom grading which doesn’t give you the feel of watching a film. The score was too generic so was the cinematography and the editing.

Highlights
There’s nothing which stands out or noteworthy.

Drawbacks
Wafer-thin screenplay with lacklustre performances.

Did I enjoy it?
No, I did not.

Do I recommend it and why?
No, I don’t. Definitely not for the adults, but you can try if your kids find this film entertaining. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the US & UK region. The release date in other countries is unknown.
