Netflix's latest documentary may have a lot more resonance with India than we imagine. Titled 'Spelling the Dream,' is it set to give the audience a lot of insight into the competitive world of American spelling bees, specifically the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Some of the best and the brightest children in the nation participate and win spelling bees, and the documentary series aims to explore what it is that makes it such a hit amongst Indian-American kids, especially since they have won every year since 1999.
Spelling the Dream is centred on four competitors - Akash (the youngest at 6), Ashrita, Shourav and Tejas, delving further into the inner workings of prodigies. CNN's Dr Sanjay Gupta and Fareed Zakaria, comedian Hari Kondabolu and ESPN's Kevin Negandhi are the experts looking at the spelling bee as sports phenomenon. Former Scripps champion Nupur Lala would also be featured. The strangest word featured in the trailer is humuhumunukunukuapua'a and you would definitely be Googling it once you're done watching it.
Akash mentions that the way to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee is 90 per cent hard work and 10 per cent other, and he probably knows what he's talking about. Check out the trailer here.
