Netflix’s Tiger King May Have Several Other Adaptations (Including a Nicolas Cage Movie). Here’s What’s In Store…
There’s something about Netflix’s Tiger King that viewers just can’t seem to get enough. This insane docuseries on the life of Joe ‘Exotic’ Schreibvogel is centred around his unauthorized Oklahoma tiger zoo and the many people around him who are far weirder than the creatures in cages. And for some odd reason, it is one of the highest-rated shows on any streaming platform at the moment, so much so that it has visibly boosted the sales of tiger-related products all over. A sequel series named ‘Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic’ is on its way on Investigation Discovery but there’s a lot more in store for fans.
Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage is known for his roles in movies like National Treasure, Ghost Rider and Moonstruck. And will now be donning the role of the animal enthusiast for an eight-part limited scripted series created by American Vandal showrunner Dan Lagana for CBS Television Studios. The series is reportedly based on a Texas Monthly article by Leif Reigstad called “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey into the World of a Man Gone Wild.”
This is the second scripted series in the works, with the first being announced a few weeks earlier. This one is based on a podcast and will star Saturday Night Live-star Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin, the CEO of Big Cat Rescue and Exotic’s arch-nemesis. Baskin is quite popular as a social media celebrity due to her funny greetings. Kate is also producing the show but we are yet to see if it is named the same as the ‘Over My Dead Body’ podcast. The role of Exotic is also yet to be cast although we hear some A-grade names floating around.
If an Instagram update on April 5 is to believed, actor Rob Lowe and showrunner Ryan Murphy are working together to develop another scripted version of the show in their own style.
Apart from scripted shows, some investigative docu-dramas on what really happens at the Tiger King’s premises have already been aired by Fox. It is being touted that many such programmes may be in the offing.
Finally, The Sun reported that 20th Century Fox is in the process of developing a movie inspired by Joe Exotic and his tigers. While this is yet unconfirmed, sources have claimed to the paper that actor Orlando Bloom is being considered for the role.
