OTT or Theatres - Ayushman Khuranna answers.

The argument of OTT Vs Theatrical release is definitely going to be a never-ending one. Every few days we see someone expressing their views on the topic. But the popular opinion is theatrical release in comparison to OTT release. But this current pandemic has forced many filmmakers to release their films directly on streaming platforms.
The recently released Gulabo Sitabo starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmaan Khurana, whose premiere rights were bagged by Amazon Prime Video was criticized to have released directly to the web instead of a theatrical release. Also, the streaming giant has bagged the premiere rights for Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi which will be releasing on 31st July 2020.
In a recent interview with Filmfare, actress Parineeti Chopra said, “Somehow we are still traditional and feel like OTT is a compromised release. But you never know, everyone is changing his or her way of thinking and functioning." She also added, “Maybe, OTT will become more important now. But there's that traditional Indian movie-goer in me, who believes cinema will never die. We want our films to release in theatres, whenever it happens". Just before the lockdown, we saw Parineeti promoting her upcoming film “Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. Also, her upcoming “The Girl on the Train” remake and Saina Nehwal biopic is in post-production and production respectively.
Similarly, Ayushmaan Khurana also expressed his view on this matter in a recent interview with Film Companion. He stated "I came to Mumbai to be an actor, and watching myself on the big screen still gives me a high. If I had an option, I would’ve stuck to a theatrical release but this was the producer’s decision which I had no say in it."
Every actor or a director or a producer would want their films to release in theatres. But the practical decision of OTT streaming is benefiting the small and mid-budget films. Which are mostly reduced to small screens tucked at a multiplex?
