What is the story about?

Pon Manickavel (Prabhu Deva) is introduced to us as a very honest and straightforward cop, who has walked out of his duties because of an incident that troubled him. As a tough murder case crops up, Ponmanickavel has to return to solve it, to be led into many other turns.

For some reason, Pon Manickavel feels like it is a film that has been shot five years ago, as it has a commercial screenplay format that reminds us of films that came sometime back. The film presents Prabhu Deva like a big mass star and is treated in a very old-school mechanism that is not new but somewhat engaging. Director AC Mugil has a lot of nice ideas up his sleeve, but all of them don’t translate onscreen and the film ends up as a mixed bag on the whole.

Prabhu Deva’s performance in the film is not perfect, for the star does not convincingly fit into the shoes of a mass hero. Though it is nice to see him pick up some well-sketched up scenes where brain is involved, the brawl sides of it don’t work out the way we want. The film has decent performances from its support artists such as Nivetha Pethuraj, Suresh Menon and the others.

Music & Other Departments

Pon Manickavel has a functional score from Imman, with the Uthira Uthira track working out best. The cinematography and editing are strictly average.

A few interesting turns that the film takes keep the momentum going.

The film should have had better treatment, to make things look a little updated.

Did I enjoy it?

A decent film at best, there were portions that I felt like skipping.

Do I recommend it?

If you have nothing special to do, this could be an okay pick this weekend.
