SonyLIV makes inroads into Tamil and Telugu content
SonyLIV, the OTT platform division of Sony Pictures Network is officially debuting in the South-Indian entertainment industry with a host of originals and content in Telugu and Tamil. The content will include web series, films, international shows dubbed in both languages, the company had announced to the media.
Among the first few originals to release in this space include Bhajana Batch (Telugu). Aivar (Tamil) besides They call him Animal, Artha Sastram and My Marappu. For its South India-language foray, Sony had also acquired content from several regional channels like Polimer News, Seithigal TV, Jaya Plus, Raj News and Sakshi TV, among others. The dubbed versions of Hindi shows like Crime Patrol, Beyhadh, Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi, Aladdin, CID, Main Mayke Chali Jaungi, Ladies Special, Patiala Babes among many others will be made available in Telugu and Tamil for SonyLIV's users.
Partnerships with top production houses and other local talent are likely to happen in the future. SonyLIV is expected to add over 20 originals by the end of this year, added Uday Sodhi, business head, digital, Sony Pictures Networks India. The company believes that there's an 80 million user market for Tamil and Telugu they would want to make most out of. Initially, a free service, SonyLIV will come up with a user subscription model in the coming months.
