Spider-Man franchise to find a home in Disney+ and Hulu following multi year deal between Sony and Disney

Sony and Disney have signed onto a multi-year deal which makes franchises like Spider-Man eligible for an OTT release on streaming platforms such as Disney+ and Hulu. Other platforms benefitting from the "unprecedented" deal are FX, ABC, Freeform, all of which come under Disney. Although the Spider-Man franchise does not fall under the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Disney+ due to legal reasons it will still come as a relieving surprise for fans of MCU to have the friendly neighbourhood superhero join its streaming siblings under the MCU tent.

The deal comes after Sony struck a partnership with Netflix which has the streamer opening up its library to theatrical releases of Sony in 2022. Sony's direct-to-digital titles will also be under Netflix. In this multi-year deal with Disney, Disney+ will get theatrical titles of Sony after it has had its run on Netflix. Although money matters were not announced, sources close to Deadline said that the Netflix and Disney deals closed at more than $3 billion.

Film franchises like Spider-Man, Hotel Transylvania, and the Jumanji will all come under this exclusive deal. Linear networks joining the new deal include ABC, Disney Channels, Freeform, FX and National Geographic.

According to Deadline, The official announcement said the deal “gives Disney enormous programming potential across its platforms and makes them key destinations for a robust collection of Spider-Man films.” Hulu will also get a “significant number” of library titles beginning as early as June.
