‘Stateless:’ Cate Blanchett’s ‘Poetic’ Refugee Drama Acquired by Netflix

A new limited series will be releasing soon on Netflix that follows the lives of four strangers at an immigration detention centre in the middle of the Australian desert. “Stateless”, which arrives on July 8th, is a limited series made up of 6 episodes and starring Yvonne Strahovski, Jai Courtney, Asher Keddie, Fayssal Bazzi, Dominic West, and Cate Blanchett. In the series, we will see the stories of an airline hostess who has escaped from a dangerous cult, an Afghan refugee and his family fleeing persecution, a young father escaping a dead-end job and a bureaucrat running out of time to contain a national scandal.

Netflix shares that it focuses on four strangers whose lives collide while they’re all stuck at the detention centre. And that centre is in the middle of the Australian desert. There’s nowhere to run or hide to escape some of the atrocities they’ll face.

The four characters couldn’t be any more different from each other. There’s an airline hostess on the run from a cult, a bureaucrat trying to contain a scandal, a young father trying to get out of a dead-end job, and an Afghan refugee fleeing from persecution. They all have reasons for being in the centre and sound to be on a voluntary basis.

Additional cast members include Rachel House, Kate Box, Clarence Ryan, Claude Jabbour, Rose Riley and Helana Sawires.

Tony Ayres, co-creator and executive producer says, “We have assembled the most extraordinary array of Australian talent to make this show, both in front of and behind the camera. In each case, people were drawn to Stateless because it asks one of the most vexing questions of our times – how do we as a nation maintain control of our sovereign borders whilst retaining our own humanity?”

Co-creator, executive producer and actor Cate Blanchett said, “Whilst this story centres on Australia, the dilemmas that it explores through four absorbing characters will resonate globally: the desire for personal freedom, the need for social stability, an escalating lack of faith in the political process and the deeply unsettling impact this has on individual lives.”

The first-look images were released on Netflix’s teasery Twitter profile See What’s Next. They certainly give us a sense of what to expect in this six-part drama show, which is set to tell the tale about individuals in an immigration detention centre. While this series is set in Australia, it’s a good indication of the lives of those in detention centres around the world.
