TAIKA WAITITI TO HELM TWO ‘CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY’ ANIMATED SERIES FOR NETFLIX
Consummate writer-director Taika Waititi, more popularly known as the 2020 Academy Award winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for his seminal movie, Jojo Rabbit, has been signed on by Netflix to create two animated series on the beloved Roald Dahl book, 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.
As per media reports, one series will follow the narrative of the classic book, 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', detailing the adventures of Charlie Bucket and the other kids inside the chocolate factory.
The other series will be centred on the Oompa Loompas, the tiny mythical humans that were brought back from the African forests by Willy Wonka to work in his chocolate factory. The Oompa Loompas are a merry bunch of workers who sing songs and work briskly, creating delectable chocolates of every hue and ilk in the Willy Wonka chocolate factory.
Taika Waititi will write, direct, and executive produce both projects. Waititi is also well known for writing and directing Marvel Films' Thor Ragnarok recently, among others.
The streaming giant also revealed that the two series mark the beginning of an extensive partnership between Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company, which will reimagine many of Dahl’s stories, including Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, and others.
Netflix is taking the concern of ramping up its slate of animated offerings quite seriously. Collaborations with Studio Ghibli resulted in Netflix acquiring 21 classic animated films of the iconic Japanese production house for streaming on its platform. It has already released quite a bunch of those in February and March.
There have been scores of other animated films that Netflix has already added to its repertoire or is in the process of adding, as part of the company’s continued efforts to grow its best-in-class library of animated films.
