The Most Anticipated Hindi OTT shows/movies coming your way in 2020 and beyond…

A lot has happened over the last year. We got a bonkers second season of Sacred Games (that one we’re still trying to wrap our heads around), The Family Man made us fall in love with the brilliance of Manoj Bajpayee all over again, and Made in Heaven and Delhi Crime (all returning shows) made us more wary of what exactly goes on in the capital. Meanwhile, the first half of 2020 seems to go by in true series fashion where some months move too fast, some too slow, and we’d all have rather been spectators than living in our own bizarre story.

God only knows what the rest of the year has in store in terms of the pandemic, but at least there’s some certainty that the following shows and original movies are there to fall back upon just in case (only the air dates may move around here and there, so much for reliability). Some shows and movies for 2020, a bit for 2021, we’ve kept that all with the hope that no matter what life has in store, we’re still in for some content.

AK vs. AK (Original Film) - Netflix
Premiere Date: Late 2020
Starring: Anil Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap
Why We’re Excited: Helmed by Vikramaditya Motwane, AK vs. AK has the unique disposition of starring Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap as versions of themselves (well, a famous actor and a film director, respectively), with the latter’s character kidnapping the former’s daughter. The premise is cool enough and since shooting is already over, we hope that this one releases soon after lockdown.

Betaal, Season 1 (Series) - Netflix
Premiere Date: May 24, 2020
Starring: Viineet Kumar, Aahana Kumra, Jitendra Joshi, Siddharth Menon, Manjiri Pupala, Syna Anand Suchitra Pillai
Why we’re excited: Produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, Betaal is an intriguing ‘zombie apocalypse drama.’ Horror fiction of this scale and calibre is still at a nascent stage in India and we can’t wait to see how spine-chillingly binge-worthy Betaal is.

Bombay Begums (Series) - Netflix
Premiere Date: TBA
Starring: Pooja Bhatt, Amruta Subhash, Plabita Borthakur, Rahul Bose, Shahana Goswami, Manish Choudhary, Rituraj Singh
Why we’re excited: Directed by Lipstick Under My Burkha director Alankrita Shrivastava, Bombay Begums is set in the cut-throat world of banking in India’s financial capital. If the director’s previous work is to go by, it promises to give an authentic portrayal of five modern Indian women in the workforce, and it would be a pleasure to see Pooja Bhatt return to the screen!

Bulbul (Original Film) - Netflix
Premiere Date: TBA
Starring: Avinash Tiwary, Tripti Dimri
Why we’re excited: While Laila Majnu didn’t set the box office on fire, its lead pair was noted for their chemistry as well as their individual performances. An Anushka Sharma production, Bulbul is a period romance set in Kolkata which marks the directorial debut of lyricist-screenwriter Anvita Dutt. With all these names attached, it’s bound to be magic.

Freedom (Original Film) - Netflix
Premiere Date: TBA
Starring: Naseeruddin Shah, Manisha Koirala, Huma Qureshi, Kalki Koechlin, Divya Dutta, Zoya Hussain, Shashank Arora, Neeraj Kabi
Why we’re excited: Look at this cast. Can we help but not be excited? Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee has thus far director one segment each for Netflix’s anthologies Ghost Stories and Lust Stories, but we haven’t seen him do a full-fledged feature in a while. Freedom is a story that transcends generations.

Serious Men (Original Film) - Netflix
Premiere Date: Late 2020
Starring: Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Why we’re excited: Whatever Nawazuddin Siddiqui does for Netflix makes us sit up and take notice, and now he will be featured in Sudhir Mishra’s adaptation of Manu Joseph’s novel about a faux boy genius. The film went on floors last year so we hope to see it release soon.

Tribhanga (Original Film) - Netflix
Premiere Date: Late 2020
Starring: Kajol, Tanvi Azmi, Mithila Palkar, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Vaibhav Tatwawaadi, Manav Gohil, Nishank Verma
Why we’re excited: Renuka Shahane helms this powerful story of three women who make up many generations of the same family. God knows how much we enjoy watching Kajol and this is for a film produced by husband Ajay Devgn, making it all the more special. The film is already in post-production.

Untitled Madhuri Dixit series (Netflix)
Premiere Date: TBA
Starring: Madhuri Dixit
Why we’re excited: Madhuri Dixit. That’s it. That’s all we have so far. Dharma Productions announced late last year that the sensational actress was signed on for her OTT debut with Netflix in a supernatural show which centres around a superstar. We can’t imagine anyone other than her to have our interest piqued.

Returning Shows: Delhi Crime Season 2 (2020)

Paatal Lok Season 1 (Series) - Prime Video
Premiere Date: May 15, 2020
Starring: Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Kabi, Abhishek Banerjee, Gul Panag, Swastika Mukherjee
Why we’re excited: Producer Anushka Sharma’s digital debut is a look at the seedy underbelly of the crime world. The trailer is in and it’s already given us a sneak peek of what’s in store - a lot of blood and violence, that’s our thing.

Bandish Bandits (Prime Video)
Premiere Date: TBA
Starring: TBA
Why we’re excited: Would this be the first Hindi musical show to grace an Indian streaming service? Perhaps. With music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Bandish Bandits is a millennial love story between a classical singer and a pop star, promising to either be a clash of ideologies or a melodious duet. It is directed by Anand Tiwari.

Returning Series:
Breathe Season 2 (Late 2020),
Mirzapur Season 2 (July 2020),
Made in Heaven Season 2 (Late 2020),
The Family Man Season 2 (2021)

Aarya Season 1 (Series) - Hotstar
Premiere Date: June 2020
Starring: Sushmita Sen
Why We’re Excited: It’s been a while since we saw the powerhouse performer and stunning Sushmita Sen on-screen, and Aarya is her OTT debut, after all! Directed by Ram Madhvani (who also helmed Neerja), Aarya is about an actress who discovers that her husband is involved with organised crime. The show was slated to release this month but is slightly delayed.

Moghuls (Series) - Hotstar
Premiere Date: TBA
Starring: Shabana Azmi, Ronit Roy, Dia Mirza
Why We’re Excited: Nikhil Advani is enjoying his resurgence in the world of TV and film and the sheer theme of Moghuls, which traces the rise and fall of the Mughal empire from Babar to Aurangzeb promises to be a worthy ride in his hands. We presume that each emperor makes up a season of the show (Is this India’s answer to The Crown), with Ronit Roy kicking things off as Babar.

Returning Series:
Hostages Season 2 (May 2020)

Naxal - (Series) - Zee5/ ALT Balaji
Premiere Date: Late 2020 / 2021
Starring: Rajeev Khandelwal
Why we’re excited: We’ve never seen a show based on the Naxal movement in India, and director Kunal Kohli makes his OTT debut with this sensitive subject. Zee5 favourite Rajeev Khandelwal stars as Raghav, a cop who has to save the country from a huge threat. The series alternates between the urban Naxalite ideology and the rural interiors of Maharashtra.

Returning Series:
Poison 2 (Late 2020),
RejctX 2 (May 14, 2020),
Abhay Season 2 (Late 2020/2021)

Illegal Season 1 - (Series) - Voot Select
Premiere Date: May 12, 2020
Starring: Neha Sharma, Piyush Mishra, Akshay Oberoi, Satyadeep Mishra, Kubbra Sait, Sheeba Chaddh
Why We’re Excited: The last great legal drama for India was on TV, so you can understand why this is a big deal. Neha Sharma stars as a lawyer defending an alleged rapist in this season. It is yet unknown if forthcoming seasons will deal with different cases. Meanwhile, the show has a stellar cast.
Others

Scam 1992 (Series) - Voot Select
Premiere Date: Mid-2020
Platform: TBA
Starring: Pratik Gandh, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Satish Kaushik, Anant Mahadevan, Rajat Kapoor, Nikhil Dwivedi, K K Raina, Lalit Parimoo
Why We’re Excited: We desperately need an Indian version of the anthologies American Crime Story or Trust, and Scam 1992 kickstarts Hansal Mehta’s true-crime series, the first season of which explores the controversial stockbroker Harshad Mehta and journalist/whistleblower Sucheta Dalal and the notorious Indian stock market scam of 1992.
