What is the story about?
As a writer, I’ve grimaced at the thought of watching a family drama. But ‘The Raikar Case’ is one compelling take! Director, Aditya Sarpotdar has delved into the detail of the script and has showcased every aspect of the plot with great dexterity. The beauty of the plot involves, a lack of pretentiousness, as the story emerges as organically as it would in real life. The riddles of this murder mystery are further intensified with high-lifestyle and shallow personalities.
The scene opens at Tarun Zacry Naik Raikar jumping off a cliff and kicking the bucket. But this isn’t a suicide as Inspector John Pereira (Neil Bhoopalam) righteously sounds off. There is an evident blood clot on the corpse that leads him to believe that this is a murder. This is a high profile case and heads turn towards Yash Naik Raikar (Atul Kulkarni); the head of the family. He is on the brink of commencing his political career and is left to wash all the dirty linen, as the mysterious murderer diplomatically toys around with his feelings and the lives of his loved ones.
Yash deeply roots his faith in his daughter, Etasha (Parul Gulati). He leaves her in charge of the Naik Raikar group and moves onward for interrogation. While sitting in her room just days after Tarun’s demise and after her father’s arrest, Tasha receives a bouquet of flowers from the Late Tarun. Somehow she joins the dots and goes on to prove that her father isn’t actually the murderer. Inspector Pareira encourages to keep an eye on every member of her family, as the murderer is right there. So who is the murderer, is it Etasha? Or Etasha’s younger brother Mohit (Kunal Karan Kapoor) or is it someone else?
Overall we are touched by the very candid performance! Atul Kulkarni aces at the kind of part he’s played, he has played a similar part in the ‘City of Dreams’. only that here his role changes from that of a politician to that of a business tycoon getting into politics. Etasha has predominantly played a uni-dimensional role, with fewer happy parts to give her character the required edge; but the part played by her is convincing. She was pretty responsible at holding the show together and making it a classic hit. Neil Bhoopalam isn’t a typical cop. There is one striking element that stands out in his performance that makes his part very different. He has explored the depths of diplomacy, which ha several nuanced dimensions and plays each part very well. He is a through romantic, but often shies from displaying that on screen.
The spillover from the famous Hotstar series ‘City of Dreams’, is evident, especially when it comes to the squabbles between Mohit and Tasha. The power struggle is kind of replicated. Women’s emancipation is witnessed at it’s worst best, where the plot rightfully explores, how one woman can become another woman’s enemy. I love it when Sakshi (Ashwini Bhave) turns to a green-eyed monster, on learning of Yash’s affair with Lilly. That sequence is well captured. The transition of the flashback and assumptions are smooth, and it keeps the viewer in tune to what is happening.
Music and other departments
The music seems very common, however, it plays at the right time. They could certainly use some variation to add to intensify the thrill. The Editing is smooth and well planned.
Ashvini Bhave’s expression and the chemistry she shares with Atul Kulkarni are serious highlights. Ashvini has carried herself well as the ‘neck’ to the ‘head’ of a growing business family and runs the show with poise. She doesn’t flinch even slightly, keeping the mystery right till the end.
The whole plot was well-formed, but the abrupt end raises a lot of questions.
