Toni Collette to play murder victim Kathleen Peterson in HBO Max series 'The Staircase'

HBO Max's limited series The Staircase will be joined by Toni Collette who will be playing Kathleen Peterson, the wife of Colin Firth's Michael Peterson, the man who was convicted of murdering her. The series is based on the true-crime docuseries by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade which premiered first in 2004 and had a follow-up on Netflix in 2018. Collette will play Kathleen Peterson, a corporate executive, mother, stepmother of five and wife of Michael Peterson, played by Firth.

Antonio Campos (Christine) will be directing The Staircase along with Maggie Cohn, who served as the writer of American Crime Story. The series will not only take factual information into account from the docuseries but also facts and records surrounding the case along with books written on the 16 year-long judicial fight over Kathleen's death and Michael's arrest. Michael Peterson was convicted of murdering Kathleen in 2001, a charge that was reduced to manslaughter in 2017 and Peterson released from prison. He had claimed his wife died after falling down the stairs at their home after consuming alcohol and Valium, but an autopsy concluded she died from multiple injuries, including blows to the back of her head with a blunt object.

HBO Max and Annapurna Tv co-produce while Campos and Cohn have written will executive produce and showrun the series.
