Top investors urging Disney to move Black Widow to Disney+

In a recent the development, we hear that a top Disney investor wants Disney to bypass movie theatres of films with blockbuster potential that includes much-delayed Black Widow to stream on Disney+. A while ago The Walt Disney Company announced a restructuring that would immediately shift its focus to streaming via its Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu platforms. And not long ago Disney announced the Pixar’s Soul for a straight to Dinsey+ on Christmas Day 2020. And it will be available for all the subscribers of the streaming service, unlike their Mulan’s $29.99 premier access fee. Dan Loeb, the hedge fund manager for Third Point with roughly a $1 billion stake in the company, says sending high-profile films like Black Widow to Disney+ would attract new subscribers while retaining current customers.

"What Netflix has is this immense subscriber base that allows it to invest in an enormous amount of content and amortize that to get more subscribers," Loeb told Variety. "Disney isn't there yet, but they need to get there as quickly as possible. If they don't get critical mass in their subscriber base, they will be permanently disadvantaged versus Netflix."

Disney CEO Bob Chapek has confirmed that their streamer reached its five-year goal in just eight months, putting them ahead of a forecast that predicts 200 million subscribers by 2025.

To move the streamer closer to Netflix's 193 million paid subscribers, Loeb urges Disney to skip theatres and instead send 2021-dated films like Black Widow to Disney+.

Previously set for May 1 and then November 6, 2020, the Scarlett Johansson-starring Black Widow is now dated May 7th, 2021. The delay makes 2020 the first year without a Marvel Studios film since 2009.

Meanwhile, the Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe launches with WandaVision, the first among the Marvel Studios series, premiering on Disney+ during the end of this year. Also the second season of the streamer’s inaugural original series, Star Wars spinoff The Mandalorian releasing on October 30th, 2020.
