Amazon Prime Video's chilling conspiracy thriller Homecoming returns with a new season on 22 May, this time with Janelle Monáe as the primary protagonist. She replaces Julia Roberts as lead, whose character arc playing Heidi Bergman ended with Season 1.
The teaser-trailer of Homecoming Season 2, released this morning by Amazon Prime Video, shows Janelle Monáe waking up in a boat on a lake in the middle of nowhere. She has no recollection of how she got there, or even who she is.
The original premise of Homecoming introduced viewers to a shady government program that supposedly helps war returnees deal with the traumas of war and the consequent PTSD. Called the Homecoming Initiative, it is run by the dubious Geist Group, which, as discovered by Julia Roberts' character in Season 1, is pumping war veterans with a drug that claims to treat PTSD, but which is actually deleting their memories so that the government can't redeploy them.
In Season 2, as Janelle Monáe's character tries to piece together her identity, she unravels clues that lead her to the shady Geist Group. The short 30-sec teaser offers no clue about what she learns there. But it does give us glimpses of the characters that'll headline the new mystery.
Joining Monáe in Season 2 are Academy Award winner Chris Cooper, who plays Leonard Geist, the freakish founder of the Geist Group, and Emmy Award-winning actress Joan Cusack, who plays Francine Bunda, a despotic military woman.
Returning characters from Season 1 include Stephan James who will reprise his role as Walter Cruz, the returning soldier who is counselled by Roberts' character in Season 1. With his memories erased at the Homecoming Initiative, Cruz tries to get on with life post-war, when flashes of the past make him realise that something even more sinister is underway at the Geist Group and Homecoming.
Hong Chau too returns as Audrey Temple. In Season 1, she was more of an inconsequential junior at Geist. Season 2 gives her a position at the top of the corporate ladder.
Homecoming is based on the Gimlet Media podcast created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg. The duo helped develop the picturised version of the narrative, and also serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Kyle Patrick Alvarez (The Stanford Prison Experiment) has directed the new season, taking over from Sam Esmail, director of the first. Esmail, however, continues as executive producer, along with Julia Roberts. Chad Hamilton of Anonymous Content, along with Chris Giliberti, Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber of Gimlet Media are the other executive producers on the show.
Homecoming Season 2 premieres on Amazon Prime Video on 22nd May 2020.
