The star-studded trailer for singer-songwriter-performer Beyonce's new visual album, Black is King, is a stunning work of art and imagery. Disney+ released the trailer a few days ago, and we are in complete awe.
Black is King is based on the music on the album The Lion King: The Gift, which was made for 2019's live-action version of Disney's The Lion King. Beyonce starred in the film as a voice actor lending her voice to the character of Nala, alongside notable names like Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Oliver, and Alfre Woodard.
Beyonce is known for her striking, vivacious, and statement-creating aesthetic and that is in full supply in Black is King. The album is sure to cater to a vast demographic with all of its cultural and social contexts. Not to mention, it joins the canon of unique interpretations of the story of The Lion King (which itself is based on Shakespeare's Hamlet) where a young boy comes of age as he is forced to come to terms with his past and identity. The trailer features Beyonce with her husband Jay-Z, mother Tina Knowles-Lawson, as well as Lupita Nyong'o, Naomi Campbell, and Kelly Rowland.
Queen Bey writes, directs, and produces this fantastic concept album, but it also boasts the names of Dafe Oboro, Julian Klincewicz, Derek Milton, Meji Alabi, Joshua Kissi, Alexandre Moors, and Deon Van Zyl in the crew. Filming has been done across New York, Los Angeles, South Africa, West Africa, London and Belgium.
Black is King will be available for streaming on Disney+ and its partner subscriptions on July 31. It will also be released in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Namibia, Cameroon, Liberia, Burundi, Senegal, Togo, Somalia, Benin, Congo, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Gabon, Cape Verde, and other countries through MultiChoice Group’s M-Net and Canal+ Afrique.
