The film that went through production hell. Yes, erstwhile Phantom Films’ co-production with Sony Pictures, Ghoomketu, is finally ready to release after four years and will be streaming exclusively on Zee5 on May 22.
Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a struggling writer to makes his way to ‘Bombay’ (the city of dreams and of Bollywood), Ghoomketu refers to his name. And why? Probably because he’s spending most of the movie in search of a lost script. Enter a good-for-nothing cop played by Anurag Kashyap and we have ourselves a comical ride. Meanwhile, Siddiqui’s character will be seen spouting some funny one-liners and also breaking the fourth wall from time to time. Kashyap and Siddiqui have previously collaborated on many projects as director and actor respectively, such as Gangs of Wasseypur, Raman Raghav 2.0 and Sacred Games, but this is the first time they are sharing screen space.
Ghoomketu was initially intended to release theatrically and is now enjoying a new lease on life thanks to the OTT boom and the coronavirus pandemic. Of course, it is evident from the trailer that this film has been stuck in post-production phase for a while considering how different its cast (especially the cameos by Amitabh Bachchan, Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha) looks.
Directed by Pushpendra Nath Misra, who recently wrote and directed the Netflix show Taj Mahal 1989, Ghoomketu also stars Ila Arun, Raghubir Yadav, Swanand Kirkire and Ragini Khanna. Chitrangada Singh, Lauren Gottlieb and filmmaker Nikkhil Advani will also be seen in a brief appearance in the film.
