Netflix today dropped the trailer and premiere date of the hotly anticipated Vir Das starrer, 'Hasmukh', and its premiere date, which until now was a mystery. Well, Hasmukh releases on 17th April on Netflix, and the trailer is as entertaining as it could be.

Hasmukh has Vir Das playing a stand-up comic in a town in Uttar Pradesh. The first thing that catches your attention is his get-up. It is neither over the top nor in your face. It is subtle and apt for his role as a comic from the Hindi heartlands.

Next thing that grabs your attention in the trailer is, of course, the star of the series — the edgy story. Hasmukh gets his mojo as a comic on stage only when he murders. As the character of Ranvir Shorey tells Hasmukh in the trailer — even stand-up comics need some kind of Viagra before they can perform, and murdering is Hasmukh's Viagra for getting his performance right. Ranvir Shorey plays Hasmukh's manager of sorts, in the series, and he too seems to have got his look and act on point.

So Hasmukh is a serial killer by day and a stand-up comic by night. The action then shifts to Mumbai, and the big-ticket show, Comedy ke Badshah, where Hasmukh gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance. The killing spree continues in Mumbai, and the unknown killer becomes notorious as the 'Belt-killer'.

Of course, since the protagonist of an Indian series cannot be shown in an outright negative light, our man Hasmukh only murders goons and criminals. But sooner or later, the law must catch up with him. What happens next? We'll have to wait for the series to drop, to find out.

All said and done, the trailer is entertaining and compelling, which bodes well for the series. Hasmukh has been written by Vir Das, Nikhil Advani, Nikhil Gonsalves and Suparn Verma, and directed by Nikhil Gonsalves.

Hasmukh arrives on Netflix on 17th April 2020.
