MX Player has just revealed the trailer of Ek Thi Begum, its upcoming series that is based on the Mumbai underworld and the relentless gang wars that plagued it in the 1980s.

There have been countless movies and series that have trained their lens on the Mumbai underworld. The difference between them and the compelling story of Ek Thi Begum is that the latter is centred on an unlikely player in the oft-told narrative - the wife of a ruthlessly-murdered underworld don.

The series is set in 1986, at a time when the Mumbai underworld was king, and the police, its henchmen. Ashraf and Zaheer are a loving couple, with but one blot - Zaheer works for an underworld don Maqsood. A fallout between the two leads to Zaheer being killed. The police is hand-in-glove with Maqsood, and Ashraf has no one to turn to for justice.

But Ashraf is made of a different mettle. Instead of receding into a corner to lick her wounds, she swears revenge on all those who've collaborated to destroy her world - including corrupt politicians, police officers, and Maqsood.

The trailer is full of edgy, gripping sequences that show Ashraf, who's now Sapna, carry out her revenge with cold-blooded meticulousness. The dark frames, leached of colour, add to the edginess of the imagery. If there's one colour that pops out of the dark frames time and again, it is red — the red of the blood, that splatters generously in chilling scenes. The effect is stunning; and disturbing.

The trailer touches down on all that defined the Mumbai —or should we say Bombay — of those days. Crooked politicians, corrupt policemen and ruthless gangsta types. Ashraf takes her revenge from all of these, and then some more

Anuja Sathe stars as Ashraf in the titular role. It's a substantial role, and she seems to sink her teeth into it with glee. She gives the right touch of angst and anger to her character. Chinmay Mandlekar, Ankit Mohan, Santosh Juvekar, Abhijeet Chavan, Rajendra Shisatkar and Vijay Nikam form the rest of the cast. Sachin Darekar has written as well as directed Ek Thi Begum.

Ek Thi Begum is slated to arrive on MX Player on 8th April.
