The official trailer of Netflix’s runaway hit The Crown’s fourth season has been released today. Unlike the earlier teaser, which concentrated on Lady Diana Spencer’s entry into the royal family, the trailer focuses much more on the monarch and her opposing ideals with then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Actress Gillian Anderson plays Thatcher and is a new entrant to the series, alongside Emma Corrin as the late Diana. Anderson is seen putting on a distinctive snarl in her voice specific to Thatcher. In a statement to Netflix, series creator Peter Morgan explained his thoughts on the relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher. "It could be said that they are two very similar women, born only months apart. They are very much defined by the Second World War, by a sense of frugality, hard work, commitment, Christianity and so much more," he said. The trailer also mentions in a voiceover how two women ruling Britain at the same time could be the best or worst thing for the nation.
According to the showrunner, the two were more alike than one might initially think. "It was a commonly held piece of wisdom that the Queen and Thatcher didn’t get on. I think there was probably a lot of respect. But they also had many differences, it was really fun exploring their differences and their similarities. I also get a chance to explore them both as mothers. Writing Thatcher and the Queen as mothers was probably an angle that no one has explored before. It yielded one of my favourite episodes in the season.”
Meanwhile, there is still a small glimpse of the budding romance between Diana and Prince Charles, and her metamorphosis into the people’s Princess. There is an important moment when Diana craves her mother-in-law’s love, closely followed by a series of unexpectedly violent occurrences, possibly foreshadowing a tragedy. There is a lot to look forward to in this season, from conflict to fashion to feud.
Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman reprise their roles from last season as Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth II respectively. The characters of Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, could have significant roles.
