Two weeks into debut, new OTT platform Quibi takes a tumble on iPhone App Store rankings

Quibi, the new ultra-short-form, mobile-only video streaming platform, which launched with much fanfare two weeks ago, has taken a tumble down the latest rankings for free downloads on the iPhone's App Store. It has even moved out of the list of top 50 apps available on the App Store for free downloads.

The new Jeffrey Katzenberg-created streaming service debuted on 6th April, and immediately ratcheted up 300k downloads upon launch and hit No.3 on the App Store. Quibi is available for free for a ninety-day trial period, after which it will be chargeable.

The huge number of downloads in the initial days of its launch can be attributed to the curiosity among viewers about the novel concept of Quibi - each episode of a series is under ten-minutes long, and new episodes are uploaded every day. The platform launched with more than fifty original shows streaming from day one. Many more original series have been launched since then.

Quibi had also drummed up a lot of curiosity owing to the big names associated with it. Sophie Turner, Liam Hemsworth, Chance the Rapper, Jennifer Lopez, Chrissy Teigen, Reese Witherspoon and others appearing in Quibi’s shows at launch. In addition to the shows streaming at launch, future Quibi content promises shows from filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Will Smith, Guillermo del Toro, Lena Waithe and Catherine Hardwicke.

But soon as the initial hype died, the app has dropped down the iPhone App charts, and as of today, is now out of the top 50 free apps, as per App Annie. Quibi is doing better on the Google Play Store, where it is at No.22 today.
